Stewardship for Sustainability— Focusing on the Long Haul

Tight budgets often stretch nonprofit leaders to the limit. While this may be functional for a rubber band, it is not sustainable as an operating strategy. An organization’s sustainability depends on its leaders’ ability to maintain a level of staffing and systems that promotes and supports high impact and effective oversight. In this session, we will take a step back from the daily rush and explore the dangers of the downward spiral of skimping, and the benefits of operating in the absence of crisis conditions. We will discuss key functions that are vital to good stewardship, accountability and transparency, and identify what it takes to establish a level of staffing and systems that provides for high mission impact as well as effective oversight and governance.
